1. Clean out your computer- First, delete any saved pornography on your desktop. Then, clear out the history on your browser, Google search, and any viruses. It will be easier to stop the problem from happening again if you get a fresh start.
2. Get an internet filter- A filter will help block any pop-ups and keep you off any questionable sites.
3. Be selective of media- Rid yourself of any movies, music, books, TV shows, etc. that have any hint of pornographic references or media. Fill your media with other types than you are used to.
4. Spend time with people- Pornography is most often viewed when alone so go outside, be with friends be with family. Move any computers into a circulation area, where people will walk past often.
Breaking the Addiction
1. Get support- It is easier to accomplish hard things when you have others on your side. Build a support system and use them.
2. Understand how addiction works- Understanding that this addiction has chemically altered the brain will make it easier to keep a positive attitude and the determination to continue with recovery. You are not a weak person who can't quit, your brain has literally been damaged making it hard to make decisions.
3. Utilize addiction recovery programs- There are multiple 12-step programs that you can become a part of. These programs are also beneficial in helping to build that support system.
Avoiding Slip-Ups After
1. Form good habits- You need to replace the bad habits with a good one. Fill the times you would have been looking at porn with other things. Exercise, cleaning, learning a new language, knitting, etc.
3. Make Goals- Think of reasons why you want to stop. This motivation will increase the desire you will have to want to change. Then make reachable goals that can help you change.
